چکیده

When simulating full-disc helioseismic data, instrumental noise has traditionally been treated as time-independent. However, in reality, instrumental noise will often vary to some degree over time due to line of sight velocity variations and possibly degrading hardware. Here we present a new technique for simulating Birmingham Solar Oscillations Network (BiSON) helioseismic data with a more realistic analogue for instrumental noise. This is achieved by simulating the potassium solar Fraunhoffer line as observed by the BiSON instruments. Intensity measurements in the red and blue wing of the line can then be simulated and appropriate timedependent instrumental noise can be added. The simulated time-series can then be formed in the same way as with real data. Here we present the simulation method and the first generation of a BiSON-like instrumental noise time series.

Studies of routing performance in a city-like testbed for mobile ad hoc networks

In this document we describe the demonstrator testbed which was developed to validate the solutions developed for routing in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) in the BISON project [3], and report results obtained with it. The purpose of the demonstrator as orginally stated in the project’s technical annex is to test the effectiveness of the solutions developed for routing MANETs considering a cit...

Pseudo - global Fitting of Gapped Helioseismic Data Stephen Fletcher

Mode fitting or “peak-bagging” is an important procedure in helioseismology allowing one to determine the various mode parameters of solar oscillations. We have recently developed a new “pseudo-global” fitting algorithm as a way of reducing the systematic bias in the fits of certain mode parameters that are seen when using “local” fitting techniques to analyse “sun-as-a-star” p-mode data. This ...

Definitive Sun-as-a-star p-mode frequencies: 23 years of BiSON observations

We present a list of “best possible” estimates of low-degree p-mode frequencies, from 8640 days of observations made by the Birmingham Solar-Oscillations Network (BiSON). This is the longest stretch of helioseismic data ever used for this purpose, giving exquisite precision in the estimated frequencies. Every effort has been made in the analysis to ensure that the frequency estimates are also a...

Helioseismic Data Assimilation in Solar Dynamo Models

An essential ingredient in kinematic dynamo models of the solar cycle is the internal velocity field within the simulation domain – the solar convection zone. In the last decade or so, the field of helioseismology has revolutionized our understanding of this velocity field. In particular, the internal differential rotation of the Sun is now fairly well constrained by helioseismic observations a...

Helioseismic Holography of Simulated Solar Convection and Prospects for the Detection of Small-Scale Subsurface Flows

We perform helioseismic holography on realistic solar convection simulations and compare the observed travel-time perturbations with the expected travel times from the horizontal flows in the simulations computed from forward models under the assumption of the Born approximation. We demonstrate reasonable agreement between the observed and model travel times which reinforces the validity of hel...
